On 6 July 2019, 50 operators took part in a battle of skill in the CASE Rodeo qualifiers in Leiria, Portugal.

Hosted on the premises of Entreposto Máquinas, CASE’s importer in Portugal, this was the only qualifying event to take place in the country. The occasion marked the first time in nine years that Portugal has participated in the competition. 500 people attended the event to support the operators as they took part in three games to demonstrate:

  • Speed with the CASE SR175 skid steer loader by navigating an intricate circuit while balancing a ball to score a goal
  • Ability with the CASE 580ST backhoe loader by hitting golf balls into a tube
  • Mastery with the CASE 621G wheel loader to balance boxes through a slalom, with the occasional obstacle added in for a challenge.

Attendees at the event were also given the opportunity to try out the CASE CX350D and CX210D crawler excavators.

João Felgar, Industrial Machinery Manager at Entreposto Máquinas, said of the event, “we were thrilled to host Portugal’s qualifiers at our site. The positive response to the Rodeo was overwhelming and the passion that the operators showed in challenging each other. The spectators really enjoyed the event and it was great to see these experienced operators show the full range of capabilities of the CASE machines. We were astounded by the speed and agility that was shown at the event.”

After a day of fierce competition, João Barbosa was named as the champion in Portugal. He joins Marc Font, winner of the Spanish Rodeo in Zaragoza, and the future winner of the Valencia Rodeo, which will take place on 21 September, to form the Iberian team in the European Final in October.

Elisa Valero, CASE Marketing Manager for Iberia, explains why it is important for the region to participate in the Rodeo: “Spain and Portugal are fast-growing markets for CASE and we’re finding more and more businesses investing in our fleet, particularly in the heavy line vehicles. Our decision to participate in the Rodeo was driven mainly by our customers in this region. We have many very skilled and experienced operators who know how to get the best out of our machines, and we wanted to show this. The rest of Europe better watch out. We might not have competed for the last nine years, but we’re out to win in 2019.”
